Al Sharpton and the NYT Thu, May 10, 2007

I love the way the NYT operates.

This is a good take from NewsBusters on the obvious bias in everyone’s favorite objective rag.

The main point is this: while anyone else would be skewered for making comments like Sharpton’s about Romney’s Mormonism, Al Sharpton is the teflon man. Nothing sticks, and the NYT doesn’t even act like what he said was really a big deal.

If Imus calls a group of black women “nappy-headed ho’s,” there is a huge outcry. But if Sharpton, a black man, makes comments that are offensive, no one even bats an eye.  It’s not that I have a huge problem with either person saying what they said. It’s just that there is a double standard in the media as to what is acceptable to say, and what they will put on the front page.

If it hurts the left, it will not be on the front page. If it hurts the right, then you can bet it will be in bold lettering.

To: Rev. Al Sharpton, National Action Network and Media Matters.org

The comedian, DL Hughley recently made the following comments on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno:

“There were some nappy headed women on the team and those are some of the ugliest women I have ever seen in my life.” DL HUGHLEY on Jay Leno.

Where is the outcry from mainstream media, the African American community, or all these people that called for Imus’ head on a platter?

The Rutgers Women’s Basketball team members are beautiful! When the world gave them an opportunity to rage and unleash a fury toward Imus, they didn’t. That’s beautiful. When they had the eyes of the world on them, the exhibited grace and dignity. That’s beautiful. When they had every reason and opportunity to malign and attack Imus, they forgave him. That’s beautiful. D.L. Hughley’s latest venture was canceled so he tried to piggyback on a painful period in our history by attempting to get a laugh on the cheap and THAT. WAS. UGLY!

WhatAboutOurDaughters.org is dedicated to combating negative portrayals of African American Women in popular culture. Apparently after Studio 60 went belly-up, DL landed at BET, the bastion of black empowerment ( NOT!). His new show on BET is called S.O.B., a hidden camera reality show. Ask Viacom, the owner of BET, if this is the kind of message it wants to send to African American women and girls. What about our daughters? Or are you only concerned when the degradation of Black women comes from outside the community?

people, give me a break. A lot of you need to check yourself and what you think you know.
DL landed BET’s SOB b4 studio 60 went belly up (if u dont know u wont know) but I do. and dl was just part of an ensemble show that got cancelled (thats the nature of the business) there was no piggybacking. GIMME A BREAK, AS FAR AS A PAINFUL PERIOD IN OUR HISTORY! you are puttin’ too much on the comments he made. I WOULD CALL THE RODNEY KING SITUATION A PAINFUL PERIOD IN OUR BLACK HISTORY, NOT THIS! YOU ARE READING TOO MUCH INTO THIS. LAY DOWN AND TAKE A BREATH!EXHALE!! AS FAR A CHEAP LAUGH, HES A COMEDIAN!!!! DAH!!!! oh and by the way, Don Imus is getting his job back!!! so what did the protest really accomplish?!!! Dl did not agree with what Imus said, he just said hes allowed the FREEDOM OF SPEECH! so that means to me so is DL. He said what he said and hes a black man with NAPPY HEAD!AND DAUGHTERS! and female relatives that play basketball with nappy heads!.soooo whats your point? if you dont believe in freedom of speech, thats on you. I feel you can say what you want and if their are consequences than so be it, either you believe in freedom of speech or you dont! but there are more seriuos things in life to be protested about, LIKE THE WAR! BLACK ON BLACK CRIME! AND SO ON! MOVE ON. OH YEAH, AND IF THE BASKETBALL TEAM IS NOT TRIPPIN’ ABOUT WHAT DL SAID, WHY SHOULD ANYBODY ELSE?
