A Review (in progress) Fri, January 12, 2007

IntellectualsI’m reading “Intellectuals” by Paul Johnson, and it’s proven very thought-provoking.

He looks at the lives of the men who have shaped the modern world and culture and examines them as to their families, personal dealings, and the way that they lived their lives.

Instead of finding that the “greats” were upstanding, fine specimens of humanity, bastions of morality in a decadent age, Johnson shows that those men that the world has called “great” and “intellectual” were really failures in their personal lives, usually leaving a wreckage of humanity in their path of self-pursuit.

A very good book, highly recomended.

But this is the first time anyone’s quoted me.
I like it.

(All right, wise-guys, yes, I know that it was an article about what bloggers think about a particular subject, and that I was in there with 40 others, but hey).

Man’s “wisdom” vs God’s Word Mon, January 8, 2007

The more the fruits of knowledge become accessible to men, the more widespread is the decline of religious belief. — Sigmund Freud

In Him we live, and move, and have our being. — The Apostle Paul, Acts 17:28

But what does Freud mean by “fruits of knowledge?” If he is referring to knowledge of which he approves, then this makes sense: “I don’t approve of religion, and any knowledge of which I approve tends to decrease religious belief.”
All other knowledge, i.e., knowledge that may tend towards the spread of religious belief, is then defined out of existence. This type of knowledge is not the “fruit of knowledge,” for the fruit of knowledge by his own definition tends toward the decrease of religious belief.

Perhaps a working translation of Freud’s statement could be “Secular Humanism at its heart is Anti-God.”

This is very sad. I think that this is the third story I’ve seen where a child hangs themself because they saw it on TV.

And in this article, the question is asked “why did they show this on TV?”

My question is where were the parents, and why did they let their child watch the hanging to begin with?

This is:
1) Hilarious
2) Disgusting

I read it and I couldn’t stop laughing.

Then I thought of those poor people and how they would have really loathed this woman for doing this to them by her stubborness and gluttony.

Then I laughed some more.

Did God tell Pat anything about what will happen to me this year?

Also,

Did anyone make any sense of the article where it says
“The broadcaster predicted in January 2004 that President Bush would easily win re-election. Bush won 51 percent of the vote that fall, beating Democratic Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts. He also predicted Bush’s victory for a second term in 2005.”

Perhaps I’m dumb, Mr. Reporter Person, but I thought that Bush’s re-election where he beat John Kerry was Bush’s victory for a second term. Bush has only served one other term.

This is a great article.
When people talk about income disparity, usually they’re upset about the gap between themselves and those with more. They’re not upset about the gap between them and those with less.

Some links to check out regarding the debate over global alarming…

Miles O’Brien, of CNN’s “American Morning” fell asleep during the hearings. This is not a good sign.

Senator Inhofe talks about the overhyped global warming issue…

And David Deming, an associate professor at the University of Oklahoma, talks about his experience and the irrational hysteria regarding the issue.

No jail time. In fact, if you need it, we can probably get the state to sponsor it.

Gore on Iraq Wed, December 6, 2006

AlGore is at it again.

He urges Bush to get out of Iraq “as quickly as possible without making the situation worse.”

This is the kicker.

“I would urge the President to try to separate out the personal issues of being blamed in history for his mistake and instead recognizing that it is not about him. It’s about our country,”

Do you see how sneaky this is? By saying this, Gore gets to keep Bush in the bad-guy-worst-mistake-in-the-entire-history-of-the-US mode while telling Bush to ignore it.

He tells Bush (supposedly) that the personal side of the mistake is not the real issue here, at the same time by his tone telling the rest of the U.S. that the personal side of the issue is…the main thing.

It’s like telling someone when you forgive them that you forgive them for “doing such a horrific, low-life-terrible thing.”

You’re not interested in moving on. You’re still making an issue, and making it a personal issue.

What a weasel.

Senator Clinton and a Presidential Bid Wed, December 6, 2006

If this is the first time that Hillary Clinton has considered running for President of the United States, then I’m…I don’t know what I am.

She has intended to run since before she was re-elected, but she had to be re-elected first.

Other thoughts on this.

Anyone who beleives that Hillary just “didn’t know” whether she would run for President or not is incredibly naive.

She’s known all along.
